2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

iihf world championship 2012Another great season of Ice Hockey World Cup 2012 is just around the corner. This time the IIHF event is hosted in Finland and Sweden. Matches will be held at Helsinki and Stockholm from 4th may to 20th may 2012. 46 teams will battle in the 15 days of action packed contest. This World Championship Finland & Sweden is the 76 event in the series. Not only you will get to witness all the scenarios that are associated with this action packed game ice hockey such as outstanding goals and heart thumping victories, but the ice hockey world cup 2012 will also act as the deciding factor for the teams that will contest in men's Olympic ice hockey tournament in 2014.

Ice hockey world cup 2012 received five bids in total, to host this event. All of these bidding nations were European. However, the congress decides on Finland & Sweden. The specific location for the games in world championship Finland & Sweden would be Hartwall Areena in Helsinki and Ericsson Globe in Stockholm. To help the strong teams and to make the weak teams work harder; there is some change that has been introduced in the format of the game. While the number of teams in each pool would remain the same, that is, 8 teams in reach pool in this world championship Finland & Sweden, however, the preliminary and the qualification round, which was used to be held separately earlier would be merged into one this time. It simply means that out of eight, only the top 4 teams would progress towards the quarter finals of iihf ice hockey world cup 2012. This simply translates to the fact that there is no place for weaker teams in this world championship Finland & Sweden.
